Faux Locs vs Soft Locs — What’s the Difference?
February 1, 2023
When it comes to protective styles for highly textured hair, the options are endless with new trends emerging each and every day. Diving into the subject of locs — we’ve seen everything from butterfly locs to bohemian locs and goddess locs making the rounds. Getting back to basics, we’re defining the difference between faux locs, butterfly locs and soft locs.
The Difference Between Faux Locs and Soft Locs:
Faux locs is the overarching term used to describe different types of locs. Faux locs are a hairstyle that blend synthetic hair extensions with your natural hair to create a loc look. Faux locs can either be applied with a braid-in or crochet method.
Soft locs also known as butterfly locs have a specific installation method with a softer finish, less tension and a lighter weight than traditional faux locs. Soft locks can be created by crocheting pre-made soft-locks into the cornrows or by individually wrapping hair. Because soft locs are generally softer, they have more movement when first installed making them easier to style. This style is great for anyone looking to cut down on heat damage caused by normal styling, giving your natural texture a much-needed break.
When it comes to Butterfly Locs, this style is created by wrapping wavy hair around your natural hair (or braids) using a specific technique that results in a soft, voluminous finish. These can be added either by a wrapping method or a crochet method for best results. They have a more natural, lived-in look so they can often last for 4-6 weeks with proper care. And similar to Faux and Soft Locs, they’re not just gorgeous—they also help protect your hair from daily wear and tear while promoting growth.
What Are Butterfly Locs?
Butterfly locs are a type of faux locs that have a distressed, textured appearance with curly loops peeking out—kind of like butterfly wings. Unlike traditional faux locs that have a sleek, uniform look, butterfly locs embrace a more natural, carefree, and bohemian feel.
If you're looking for a stylish, low-maintenance, and protective hairstyle that gives off effortless boho vibes, butterfly locs might be your new obsession! This trendy look has been all over social media, and for good reason—they’re lightweight, beautiful, and perfect for anyone who loves a carefree yet chic aesthetic.
How to Care for Faux Locs, Butterfly Locs & Soft Locs
Similar to other braided protective styles, daily care is key to elongating your style. Switching up your daily habits by wearing a silk scarf or bonnet while sleeping, keeping hair hydrated and wearing a shower cap to prevent locs from slipping during showering is key.
When it comes to washing, you need to take special care to avoid friction when shampooing. Concentrate at the roots and use shampoo to cleanse the scalp, allowing the shampoo to run down your lengths without rubbing the mid-lengths and ends.
How to Wear Faux Locs, Butterfly Locs & Soft Locs
The beautiful thing about faux locs, butterfly locs and soft locs are their ability to be completely customized. From adding in color to switching up your style with a ponytail or updo, or even completing your look with fun accessories like beads and hair jewelry, the options are endless.
How Long Can I Wear Faux, Butterfly or Soft Locs?
Faux locs and soft locs should ideally be worn for about 4-6 weeks, while some say they can wear Butterfly Locs between 4-8 weeks depending on your daily routine. After this time, soft locs will begin to slip and can place undue tension on your roots. When the locs begin to pull on your natural hair, they can be removed by trimming the ends (avoiding your natural hair) and unravelling them.
