After an appointment at the salon you might have a few questions when it comes time to pay. Do you tip the assistant? Do I tip based on each service or per person? What if I only got a bang trim? What if I forgot cash? There are a few rules when it comes to salon etiquette and how much your should tip your hairdresser.
Having your hair done is about more that just the finished look. Going to the salon is an experience from start to finish that hairdressers work hard to create. From the beverages to the hospitality, the scalp massages and making sure you’re 100% happy when you leave. Leaving a tip signals to the stylist that you appreciate their time as well as the finished look.
When it comes to tipping, leaving something is supremely up to your discretion. However, similar to eating out at a restaurant, if you’re happy with your service the golden rule for tipping in a salon is usually 20% of the total service fee.
Assistants work exceptionally hard and usually help keep hairdressers and the salon running. They often grab you beverages, mix your color, wash, and help blow dry while also cleaning up around the salon. Sometimes hairdressers will collect the tips and then distribute to the assistants, however it is best to ask the salon to see what is preferred. While it is up to you to decide what to tip the assistant, it is usually ideal to tip them at least $5-$10, or more if they were applying color, blow-drying or styling.
Unlike other industries, most stylists do not enjoy the perks of healthcare, sick leave or paid time off that is provided by most jobs. If they miss a day, they usually do not get paid and are responsible for many overhead costs like insurance, supplies and booth rental or commission fees. They do not have set hours and often work weekends and overtime to make sure they are available for clients.
Many businesses have now switched over to contactless payments, however, not all salons accept tips on credit cards. It is best to ask the salon when booking if you are able to tip on card. If you forgot, you can occasionally get away with tipping through Venmo or Paypal, or try and swing by another day with cash.
For regular clients, stylists often forgo charging their clients for a quick bang trim. If this is the case, you should really tip them for their time and the convenience. Anywhere from $5-$15 or more is a welcomed gesture.
In short, if you’re happy with the end result, tip your hairdresser 20% of the total service fee and don’t forget to add on a little something extra for assistants that create a smooth and relaxing experience.
