While scalp issues can be a very common problem for many, dandruff and its causes don’t get discussed enough. However, it can be the key to taking care of your scalp and creating strong, healthy strands. Read on to discover more about your scalp health and how to determine what your underlying issue is.

Do you have dandruff or a dry scalp?

One of the first things to look at your symptoms — is your head itchy? Dry? Flaky? Then determine whether you’ve got a dry scalp or you are experiencing dandruff.

Symptoms of a Dry Scalp:

  • Dry scalp is caused by dry skin.
  • It can be a result of cold, dry air, older age or irritation caused by a specific haircare product.

Signs It's Dandruff

  • Dandruff is a condition caused by excess oil in the scalp.
  • The oils build up, causing the skin cells to clump together and appear as flakes.
  • A fungus called malassezia globosa then causes these skin flakes to fall.
  • The fungus actually lives on everyone's scalp but when you’re sensitive to it, it results in an increase in dead skin cells and flakes.

How to tell the difference between dandruff and dry scalp?

  • If flakes are large and yellow or white in color, this is most likely dandruff.
  • Smaller, white or transparent flakes are typically caused by dry scalp.

Treating the issue

Regardless of what type of scalp issue you’re experiencing, properly recognizing it and seeking treatment is key to eliminating discomfort.

Treatment for dandruff

Dandruff requires a more targeted approach than dry scalp.

  • Start by investing in a quality dandruff shampoo. Look for formulas that contain salicylic acid or active ingredients that offer antifungal and antimicrobial properties.
  • You may need to test out various formulas to find one that works best for your scalp.

**If you experience any burning, irritation or redness, immediately discontinue use and contact a professional.

  • Wash hair regularly to cut down on build-up and think about working oils into your care routine. Natural oils like tea tree oil, coconut oil and aloe vera contain antibacterial properties that help cut down on the fungus that causes dandruff.
  • Surprisingly, stress is also a large factor when it comes to dandruff. Prioritize mindfulness, balance, and taking enough breaks.
  • Spend some time in the sun and consult your physician about taking a daily probiotic.

Treatment for a dry scalp

A little more straightforward than dandruff, a dry scalp should be treated with moisture!

  • Take a peek at the ingredients in your shampoo and look for sulfate-free, moisturizing and hydrating formulas.
  • Consider applying an oil treatment to your scalp at least 1-2 times a week. Castor, rosemary, lavender, and tea tree oils are all ideal for restoring moisture. Apply the treatment in small sections to ensure that the entire scalp is covered, then give yourself a 5-10 minute scalp massage to ensure that the oil fully penetrates the skin.
  • Cut down on heat styling to avoid irritating the scalp.
  • Hydrate from the inside out by drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet with enough minerals and nutrients.
