The summer season consistently brings out new color inspiration and possibilities. While most clients opt-in for lighter and brighter variations of their hue, darker shades will still be trending this year. From platinum to caramel balayage and dark brown shades — these are some of the top hair color trends for blondes and brunettes for summer 2023.
While natural blonde shades on the “nude” spectrum will be in this summer, platinum blonde and balayage blonde is making a comeback. In addition to achieving the look, care and upkeep will be key for blonde clients this season. Due to exposure to the sun during the summer months, blonde hair can easily become damaged or discolored, which is why color care will be essential for blondes.
High definition blonde is back. To get the look, double process and babylights will be key to achieving high lift results. One hair is lightened to the desired lift, ensure cool tones by utilizing toners with violet, blue or green reflects based on your client’s undertone.
The quintessential summer color trend, balayage makes a strong comeback each season for its wearability and laid back placement. Stylists should use clay-based lighteners with freehand techniques or backcombing with foils to achieve the look.
Just like it sounds, nude blonde is the most natural-looking blonde shade of the season. Minimal in contrast, but with tonal dimension, this look utilizes the natural base shade of your client and looks to only lift a few degrees lighter. Less obvious that balayage, you’re going for barely sunkissed pieces that look as natural as possible.
The trend toward warmth continues this season with the addition of caramel balayage for brunettes. It has the same iconic placement as a traditional balayage but aims to add warmth throughout the finished result. Pre-lighten as you would with balayage and then add neutral warmth back in with your toner of choice.
Enhance natural brunettes with the slightest sun kiss. Think of this as the brunette version of nude blonde, expensive brunette that works with your client’s natural base shade and isn’t as obvious as traditional highlights. Think face-framing pieces and peek-a-boo lights to add character to your color without being obvious.
Celebs such as the Kardashians have always rocked deep brunette hues, but with the likes of Megan Fox and Jenna Dewan joining the ranks, dark brown is seriously trending this summer. If your client is transitioning from another shade or isn’t sure they want to keep the color for future seasons, consider adding a toner or gloss instead of using a permanent shade.
